Fuqua School of Business

Duke University

Duke, located in Durham, North Carolina, is known for the vastness of its campus. With nationally renowned sports teams and top-notch undergraduate and graduate programs, Duke’s reputation for excellence is multifaceted. Duke is a leader in healthcare, and Fuqua offers a concentration or certificate in Health Sector Management for MBA students. The school is known for its collaborative culture, emphasizing student involvement and referring to its “Team Fuqua” philosophy. While many MBA courses value a global perspective, Fuqua places a particular emphasis on international business environments. Incoming MBA students undergo a program the summer before classes start in which they focus on a global business trends and international issues, and travel to gain experience and exposure to their subject matter.

Fuqua is known for the strengths of its general management curriculum, but is also revered for delivering top-notch education for marketing and finance. A blend of teaching styles makes a Fuqua education a balanced experience, as students learn through case studies, lectures, experiential learning, and group projects. Classes are divided into sections of around 70 students, and for the first two terms, students take their core classes with their sections. Sections are further segmented into Integrative Learning Teams of about 5 students, who work together to complete group projects. Since the Fuqua term consists of four six-week terms, students have the opportunity to maximize the number of courses they take, providing a foundation in a variety of topics endeavoring to provide students with a breadth rather than depth of knowledge.

Since Fuqua claims no particular focus and aims to provide students with a broad rather than specific knowledge-base, there’s a lot of variety in the fields that graduates pursue. Relative to its peers, Fuqua graduates enter the healthcare industry with far more frequency, with nearly 10% of the class accepting positions in this space. Fuqua students demonstrate strong teamwork skills, and therefore tend to curry favor with recruiters and prospective employers.

The student culture at Fuqua is inclusive, collaborative, and highly social, with students organizing and hosting countless events that enrich the entire experience. Each Friday students and faculty gather to share food, drink, and themed events. Every semester ends with a production composed of skits, performances, and videos, honoring the Fuqua experience. Students also enjoy ski trips, organized competitions & games, musical performances, beach week, and countless student-organized activities and events.

Fuqua is one of the only top MBA schools to offer open interviews, in which prospective students can arrange to come to campus and interview with a student. This helps prospective students familiarize themselves with the campus before they decide whether they’d like to apply. There are four main criteria used for admission into Fuqua:

  1. Applicants believe they will be successful in the program
  2. Applicants will add significant value to the program and the school throughout their professional, personal, and academic experiences
  3. Applicants believe diversity in thought and background are important within their community
  4. Applicants demonstrate competence, character, and purpose, and have the strongest potential to be leaders of consequence

There are three required short answer prompts, each of which has a 500 character limit:

  2. What are your long-term goals?
  3. Life is full of uncertainties, and plans and circumstances can change. As a result, navigating a career requires you to be adaptable. Should the short-term goals that you provided above not materialize what alternative directions have you considered?
