After receiving my undergraduate degree in marketing, I worked for three years in advertising in New York. I was working on the media side, but I have always been interested in what makes people tick, and I wanted to help oversee the whole brand versus only the advertising side. I knew I needed an MBA to advance. I received my MBA from UNC Kenan-Flagler and went to work for Gillette in brand management in Boston. I really enjoyed my work there, but after four years the division that I worked within was sold. I learned from a former colleague that Harvard Business School was searching for someone to join their admissions team. I had worked as a peer counselor at Kenan-Flagler where I coached fellow students in resume writing and interview prep for various post-MBA positions, and I loved the personal connection and helping people get where they wanted to be. While working on the admissions board at HBS – and reading thousands of applications - I realized that the ones that were generally the most successful were those that made enough of an impression on my colleagues and me that we could remember the person as “the storyteller” or the “world traveler with an interest in healthcare.” What’s Your Personal Brand? I am a very positive person. I enjoy helping others achieve their goals and helping others feel successful. Like a coach, I enjoy giving people advice and cheering them on as they strive to reach their goals. Why EXPARTUS? I left Harvard to take some time to stay at home with my four children, but I found myself drawn to helping friends and former colleagues with advice on their business school applications. I loved cracking the code and helping people figure out how to market themselves. When I heard my former HBS colleague, Chioma Isiadinso, had started EXPARTUS, I jumped at the opportunity to join her team in 2011. What Do You Enjoy Most About Being an EXPARTUS MBA Admissions Consultant? I love what I do! Helping clients achieve their dreams of getting into a top business school gives me tremendous satisfaction. It is so competitive; it is so hard to get in. I understand how much hard work and effort goes into each application, and getting a letter of acceptance just feels great. There is no better day than when people get in and you get the call and you know that you have had a part in what will have a huge impact on people’s lives. What Are The Biggest Misconceptions MBA Applicants Have About Successfully Applying To Business School? Applicants today are very concerned about everyone else in the pool and what their backgrounds and essay topics are about. They are convinced that their job or background has to be completely unique to stand out. No one is going to create a new personal brand theme. No one is going to have a job the admissions board has never heard of. It’s your personal story around the themes that makes you unique – tying together the threads of a theme to paint a cohesive picture. The approach you take to describing what you have done and your thoughts and feelings around that – that is what make it unique.
